Understanding Natural Fibers

The science and the feel of linen, hemp, wool, cotton and silk, with care tips for each.

Why Fabric Frequency Matters

In some wellness traditions every fabric is said to carry a "frequency", measured in Hertz, with natural fibres like linen and wool at the top and synthetics near zero. The healthy human body is placed at around 100 Hz in the same tradition.

We share these figures because many people find them a helpful way to think about what feels good against the skin, and they line up with what the fibres do in practice: breathe, regulate temperature and soften with age. Treat them as a guide to comfort rather than a medical claim.

High-Frequency Natural Fibers

Linen

5,000 Hz

Linen has been treasured for thousands of years. In the fabric-frequency tradition it sits right at the top, and in everyday terms it is one of the most breathable, comfortable fibres you can wear.

Key benefits

  • Highly breathable
  • Temperature regulating
  • Naturally antibacterial
  • Gets softer with every wash
  • Hypoallergenic

Care tips

Machine wash cold, tumble dry low. Embrace the natural creases, or iron while damp for a crisp finish.

Hemp

5,000 Hz

Hemp matches linen in the frequency tradition and is one of the most sustainable fibres on earth. It needs very little water and no pesticides to grow.

Key benefits

  • Extremely durable
  • UV resistant
  • Mould resistant
  • Softens beautifully over time
  • Carbon-negative crop

Care tips

Machine wash warm, tumble dry medium. Hemp gets more comfortable with every wear.

Wool

5,000 Hz

A remarkable fibre that breathes with your body. Wool's crimped protein structure traps air, which is why it keeps you warm in winter and surprisingly cool in summer.

Key benefits

  • Natural insulation
  • Moisture wicking
  • Odour resistant
  • Naturally flame resistant
  • Biodegradable

Care tips

Hand wash or dry clean. Store with cedar to keep moths away.

Organic Cotton

100 Hz

Grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, organic cotton is gentle on both skin and soil, and scores higher than conventional cotton in the frequency tradition.

Key benefits

  • Soft and breathable
  • Chemical-free
  • Sustainable farming
  • Gentle on sensitive skin
  • Versatile for all seasons

Care tips

Machine wash cold with a gentle detergent. Air dry when you can.

Silk

15 Hz

The only natural fibre that comes as a continuous filament, silk has a unique glow and drape. Its protein structure is close to that of human skin, which is why it feels so kind to wear.

Key benefits

  • Temperature regulating
  • Naturally lustrous
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Moisture absorbing
  • Rich in amino acids

Care tips

Hand wash with a gentle soap or dry clean. Never wring; roll in a towel to remove moisture.

Understanding Synthetic Fibers

Convenient and cheap, but synthetics sit at or near 0 Hz in the frequency tradition, and in practice they trap heat and moisture instead of letting the skin breathe.

Polyester0 Hz

Petroleum-based; holds heat and moisture against the skin

Nylon0 Hz

Synthetic polymer; not breathable and not biodegradable

Acrylic0 Hz

Plastic fibre made to mimic wool; prone to static and pilling

Rayon / Viscose15 Hz

Semi-synthetic, made from wood pulp with heavy processing

Building a High-Frequency Wardrobe

Start small

  • Begin with the pieces that touch your skin directly
  • Prioritise sleepwear and underlayers
  • Add one natural-fibre piece each season

Smart blending

  • Look for 70% or more natural-fibre content
  • Keep natural fibres closest to the skin
  • Match fabric weight to the season

Mindful care

  • Use gentle, eco-friendly detergents
  • Air dry when you can to protect the fibres
  • Store with natural moth deterrents like cedar

Quality over quantity

  • Invest in fewer, better-made pieces
  • Natural fibres last longer with proper care
  • Think cost-per-wear, not the price tag
